PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE PLANS

Building off our previous post discussing how to develop a Corrective Action Plan (CAP), there are a few things we would like to bring up that go right along with a Corrective Action Plan. When a company gets flagged for DOT violations, or receives a safety rating that they would like to get rid of, they must provide a CAP that explains why the violation happened and what they will do to make sure it won’t happen again. As an example, if you were written up for having poor tread on your tires, you would write a CAP explaining that you did not follow the proper inspection procedures. To ensure that this does not happen again, you must submit something in writing. This is where a Preventative Maintenance Plan comes in to play. A Preventative Maintenance Plan is a written policy book that outlines inspection schedules and procedures that will ensure that you remain compliant with FMCSA regulations. Another thing that goes along with this is a Drivers Safety Management Plan. Together, a Preventative Maintenance Plan and a Drivers Safety Management Plan essentially make up a policy and procedures book for your company to abide by and protect its best interest.

The benefit of these two plans is that if you follow them, it will make sure that you will not fall out of compliance. In addition, if someone in your company fails to do their inspections, the company will be protected. As a company, you can state that the individual agreed to abide by the policies and procedures and he broke the rule. Disciplinary actions can then be taken, without the company being at fault.
