What is the FMCSA PSP?
FMCSA PSP is one of the most valuable pre-employment screening services which allows companies to obtain information in regards to a driver’s safety performance. The Pre-Employment Screening Program (PSP) was implemented by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) in early 2010 to provide companies with the insight they need to hire the safest drivers.
What does a PSP report show?
The FMCSA PSP report includes a driver’s personal information: complete name, driver’s license number/state of issue, and date of birth. The report shows a number of important statistics about a drivers regarding roadside inspections and crash involvement including:
- The previous three years of roadside inspection data
- The most recent five years of crash data
The PSP report breaks down into two categories, Accident and Inspection Activity.
The Accident Activity Report provides statistics for the most recent five years on:
- Total number of crashes
- Total crashes with fatalities
- Total crashes with injuries
- Total crashes with towaways
- Total crashes with a hazmat release
A summary of each accident is provided containing information from the actual crash report such as: the USDOT number under which the event took place, reporting state, crash report number, location, and date.
The Inspection Activity report of the FMCSA PSP contains similar details to the Crash Report. The Inspection report summarizes the driver, vehicle, and hazmat inspections. Companies are able to see the number of inspections for each category, number of Out-of-Service Inspections, and Out-of-Service Rate for each.
Why should companies use PSP?
Companies all around the United States use pre-employment screening services such as the FMCSA PSP to ensure that they hire only the best of the best. The PSP gives companies the insight they need in order to hire the safest drivers with the least accidents, and drivers who adhere to all federal regulations.
A 2013 study with the FMCSA reported that companies using the PSP experienced:
- 8% fewer crashes than companies not using PSP
- 20% less crashes for carriers between 6 and 20 power units
- 17% fewer service orders related to log book violations
- Better CSA scores than companies not using the service
