WHO NEEDS A DOT NUMBER

Who needs a DOT Number?, is probably one of the most common questions we get asked.  If you are operating one or more vehicles that are being used to conduct business and you can answer yes to any of the following questions listed below, you need a US DOT Number.

  1. Does your vehicle or vehicle and trailer have a gross vehicle rating over 10,000 pounds?
  2. Is your vehicle designed to transport more than 8 people (including the driver) and you cross state lines?
  3. Is your vehicle designed to transport more than 15 people (including the driver)?
  4. Do transport hazardous material in quantities requiring placarding?

Most small general contractors and even lawn care businesses need a DOT Number and they don’t realize it.  Typically, all it takes is a pickup truck with a trailer hauling something like a large lawn mower to get you in the realm of needing a DOT number.  Keep in mind, if you are crossing state lines you may also need an MC Number.  Typically, MC Numbers are also required when you travel interstate (across state lines) and you haul “for hire”, meaning you haul the property of others, not your own company property.  Hope that is helpful, if you have questions post a comment and I would be happy to answer them.
